Tips for Writing Thank You Notes After You Interview

The hand-written thank you note is a tried-and-true tactic for standing out. That’s exactly why you should add it to your follow-up routine for job interviews. After you’ve had a job interview, take a moment to hand write a thank you note on professional stationary or a card. This can help you stand out from the other candidates and show that you’re personally interested in the position. Here are some key elements for a professional post-interview thank you note.

Make it hand written.

If you have bad handwriting, just take your time and write it slow. There’s just something irreplaceably personal about a hand written note. For ink, use a traditional blue or black. Avoid fancy colors like purple, pink or anything sparkly.

Mail it a few days after the interview.

Timing is everything. If you wait too long, the interviewer may have already chosen a candidate. In fact, some people will actually write a thank you note before the interview and leave it at the front desk on the way out. Address your note to the main person in charge of your interview. You may need to call the company and ask for that person’s mailing address at the company to ensure they receive it.

Aim for simple and short.

A few sentences are all you need to get credit for caring enough to send a thank you note. Consider limiting yourself to three sentences. Use one sentence to thank them for their time, one sentence to point out something you liked about the company, and one sentence stating that you feel you’re a good match for the position.

Keep it professional.

  • Use a professional closing such as “Sincerely,” and sign your first and last name.
  • No smiley faces, no hearts and no scented paper.
  • As for the look of your stationary or cards, aim for something clean and simple.

Use these tips for writing thank you notes as a followup after your job interviews. It’s a well known way to help you stand out from other candidates and create a personal connection with the interviewer. There’s no guarantee you’ll get a callback if you do write a thank you note, but you may improve your chances for a callback if you do. Good luck!
