Applying for the Head Start Program

Your Guide to Federally Funded Childcare

Working toward a new career and taking care of a child shouldn’t be mutually exclusive. If you’re looking to alleviate the stress and financial strain that comes with being a working parent, it’s important to take advantage of resources such as the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, if you qualify.

Eligibility Requirements

Families with low incomes as determined by the HHS Poverty Guidelines with children from birth to age five, as well as children from homeless families and families receiving public assistance, are eligible for Head Start and Early Head Start services. Foster children are also eligible regardless of their foster family’s income.

The poverty guidelines are adjusted for families of different sizes and may be used to determine financial eligibility for certain federal programs such as Head Start and Early Head Start services. The guidelines are issued each year in the Federal Register by the Department of Health and Human Services.

For a further understanding of the eligibility requirements for these programs, you may refer to this section of the Head Pursue Act: Sec. 645 of the Head Start Act
