Financial aid comes in a variety of ways.

When it comes to paying for your healthcare education program, you might have more options than you think. Costs such as tuition and books can be covered by Federal Student Aid if you qualify.1 That aid can come in the form of grants and loans. We also encourage you to research other tuition assistance resources, such as need and merit-based scholarships and employer tuition reimbursement. UMA is here to help you understand your financial aid options.

Step 1

Create a FSA ID

Before you can submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you must apply for an FSA ID. This ID is used each year to electronically apply for federal student aid and to access your U.S. Department of Education records online. You can create an FSA ID on the Federal Student Aid website.

Step 2

Complete the FAFSA

You can complete the FAFSA online. You will need a copy of your tax return when supplying the required information. When you get to the section asking for school information, list UMA and input our unique identifier code of 035493.

Step 3

Complete the Information and Authorization Form

This form collects personal information and references, as well as provides guidance on the treatment of excess funds. You can get this document from a UMA Student Finance Advisor, which must be completed and returned to them to ensure the timely processing of your financial aid application.

Step 4

Complete an Entrance Interview

Learners who borrow loans under the Federal Direct Loan program are required to complete an entrance interview before loan proceeds are released. This interview is held with a UMA Student Finance Advisor.

Step 5

Complete and Sign a Master Promissory Note

To receive loans from the federal government, a signed master promissory note must be on file. Applicants may electronically sign a master promissory note online at Master Promissory Note (MPN).

Step 6

Submit Documentation to a UMA Student Finance Advisor

Once this step is complete, a Student Finance Advisor may request additional documentation. If so, you will receive an e-mail from your Financial Aid Advisor. A financial aid file is not complete until all requested information is reviewed and processed.

**These steps need to be completed before the end of the provisional registration period.

Federal Pell Grants

Unlike loans, grants do not have to be paid back. Federal Pell Grants provide funding to help eligible students without a bachelor's degree pay for their education. These students typically display financial need. Although not everyone qualifies for this need-based grant, all students should apply.

The maximum Federal Pell Grant for the 2024–25 award year (July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025) is $7,395.

Federal Subsidized Direct Loan

Direct Subsidized Loans are loans for undergraduate students with financial need. The Department of Education pays for the interest if you are in school at least half-time, during your grace period, and if a loan is in a period of deferment.

Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan

Direct Unsubsidized Loans are loans for undergraduate students with or without financial need. They start accruing interest the moment the loan is disbursed. Students are responsible for the interest over the life of the loan, including when you are in school, during your grace period, and if a loan is in a period of deferment — even if you are not required to make payments on the loan itself.

Direct PLUS Loans

Direct PLUS Loans are for parents to help pay the college expenses of their undergraduate dependent children. If a deferment is requested, payments do not have to be made while the student attends school or for an additional six months after they graduate, fall below halftime in their enrollment, withdraw, or are dismissed from their program. Without a deferment, payments are expected as soon as the loan is disbursed.
